The Leonardo Effect Enabling children to achieve their full learning potential.

Our proven interdisciplinary teaching methodology combines Art and Science to improve children's learning outcomes across the curriculum.

The Leonardo Effect Manifesto: Creative curriculum teaching

Leonardo da Vinci possessed the curiosity of a child and questioned everything. He believed using all of the senses in first-hand investigations to be essential to his development of ideas. We have found that when pupils are given the opportunity to take a similar approach it unlocks their potential, gives them a passion for learning and makes teaching a more invigorating and meaningful task.
The Leonardo Effect’s tested and validated four-stage approach enables children of all abilities to access learning and exceed ceilings set by traditional learning approaches.

How? It is a unique interdisciplinary approach removing subject boundaries by identifying subject commonalities. (British Educational Research Association Conference 2005).

It uses science and art as the catalyst to inspire learners to think, actively participate and have a voice in their own learning. It results in curriculum coherency, which is meaningful and relevant in the eyes of learners. Our validated results for literacy attainment via this process reinforce the case made by The Cambridge Primary Review (2010) to re-embed literacy in subject learning.

Our four stage teaching methodology allows you to better engage children and remove the barriers to learning:

Stage 1. Capture children’s imaginations
Use first-hand experiences in relevant contexts to inspire self-generated questions. Drawing on children’s inherent curiosity a process of discovery-based learning begins, involving research with multimedia, books, experts, fellow pupils etc. Children feel empowered and teachers feel energised to learn with them.

Stage 2. Development:
Children explore in depth, develop ideas and conduct experiments via visual, aural and kinesthetic means. This exciting and open-ended stage enables children to make connections, drawing out the learning process to facilitate development of all the learning capacities including skills, knowledge and understanding.

Stage 3. Creation:
Pupils are challenged to apply their knowledge and skills in an innovative and creative context, which takes their learning to a higher level, exceeding usual curricular requirements. From early years to KS3 we have evidence to show this works.

Stage 4. Reflect and Communicate:
In this phase pupils evaluate their own work and communicate their knowledge to a wider audience in the school or beyond in a multitude of ways, or embark on a new learning adventure inspired by the skills and knowledge they have acquired.
