Currently schools are challenged to provide both a skills based curriculum and also a high level of subject knowledge. Many find this a daunting task, but The Leonardo Effect's interdisciplinary teaching approach allows both to be achieved.

Encouraging pupils to be curious and giving them a role in deciding how to explore their ideas delivers amazing results.“It blew my expectations out of the water, it was particularly rewarding because some children who find areas of the curriculum difficult, were producing material we might not expect.”The Leonardo Effect allows you to deliver quality learning opportunities for children, increases pupils’ engagement, delivers enhanced levels of literacy, builds confidence, delivers better levels of attainment in boys and invests children with transferable skills. As teachers commented: “I can’t believe he did that, he would normally be in the bottom five of the class”, and “This enthuses children and brings out the best of the teaching and learning experience.” Our pedagogy is founded upon five years of extensive independently evaluated research, and is in daily classroom use in Scottish and Welsh Schools. But perhaps the best validation of the transformational power of our interdisciplinary teaching methodology, can be found in the testimonials of those teachers and schools who are already using our approach. |
What is our teaching methodology? The Leonardo Effect is a new form of interdisciplinary teaching centered around “synchronised integration” of Art and Science, which draws in other areas of the curriculum, most notably literacy, with remarkable results.Investigating, imagining, developing ideas and creativity are of equal relevance to both Art and Science, and in combination bolster pupils’ enthusiasm for learning. Indeed we find reluctant learners actually asking to do homework. The freedom offered by The Leonardo Effect allows teachers to identify commonalities between subjects and deliver highly engaging synchronised learning, and not simply to run lessons in parallel on a common theme. Our involvement of children in directing their own learning, of course, requires teachers to learn some new skills. This may sound daunting to some, but teachers who have completed our training are overwhelmingly positive about the approach. Even though some initially find difficulties in adapting their teaching style, all find it very worthwhile. Typical comments are “I really used the ideas that the children had given me to help me teach more creatively.” External evaluators found that previously uninterested children had become “fanatical” about their work and headteachers felt the project summed up “what good teaching was all about”. |
